Scholarship Search
Money Waiting for You
When you make the decision to further your education after completing high school, it is important to plan how your education will be funded. Most students are unaware that there are millions of dollars in private scholarships available each year. Companies, unions, foundations, community organizations, churches, and other organizations award scholarships ranging from a few hundred dollars to a complete free ride. Most of this money goes untouched if students do not actively seek out scholarships. Putting in the time and effort to search for and find a scholarship can help you fund your education for free.
Your local library or high school guidance counselor should have a number of resources to help you find scholarships that will benefit you. Most scholarships have specific criteria that the student must meet in order to qualify for award money. Some examples of these select criteria are grades, chosen major, gender, race, organization affiliation, athletic ability, military background, and many more. Certain online resources have search engines that will do the bulk of the work for you. Simply search for scholarships that apply to your specific academic needs.
Make certain when you are applying for scholarships that you are very thorough. Most deadlines are very specific and it is important that your application be neat, complete, and on time. Deadlines usually occur between December and April, so make certain to allow yourself enough time to fully prepare. Also, be aware that some Web sites or agencies will try to charge you astronomical fees to find the same scholarships you can find yourself for free. Remember, no one can guarantee you a scholarship no matter how much you pay so never write checks or give out your credit card information.
By doing the work yourself, you save money and often times open yourself up to new possibilities. Some organizations will even pay part or all of your way through school in return for a 2-4 year commitment when you graduate. Organizations such as the Merchant Marine Academy, ROTC, certain federal programs for underserved school districts and others can be alternative funding possibilities. With all of the opportunities available, it should be easy to find a scholarship that suits your needs. The links and books below should provide a way for you to begin your scholarship search.
